Background Story Generator

Most character backstory generators give you one prompt box and a wall of generic text. This one is built around how character writers actually work: every backstory follows the origin–wound–consequence arc, carries exactly one contradiction (a brutal mercenary who tithes to an orphanage, a healer who can't heal herself), and includes one concrete, repeatable detail — a scar, a habit, an object the character always carries — that you can thread through an entire novel or series.

The last line of every backstory points forward to unfinished business, so it doubles as a plot engine, not just a biography. And because you also get three alternate hooks per generate, one click gives you four directions for the same character instead of one.

Select the D&D / Tabletop RPG genre and the generator switches into campaign mode: it weaves your race and class into the story itself rather than pasting them on top — a cleric's lost faith, a rogue's unpaid guild debt, a warlock's patron calling in a favor. Every D&D backstory names at least one god, guild, or homeland your DM can build on, and ends with the reason your character is out adventuring right now, so it drops straight into session one.

Add your build to the details field — "tiefling warlock, noble background" or "dwarf cleric of Moradin, hates the sea" — and the morally gray tone is a favorite for characters whose party doesn't fully trust them yet. The banned-cliché list means no murdered-parents openers and no chosen ones, unless you ask for them.
